How Journaling Changed My Life
When Life Fell Apart
There have been a few moments in my life when I wasn’t sure what came next.
One of those moments came after my first divorce.
I was young, heartbroken, and suddenly faced with the reality of raising two little boys on my own. I remember wondering how I was going to make it. How would I provide for my children? How would I rebuild my life? How would I find my footing again?
A Class That Changed Everything
During that season, I attended a program called Women’s Education and Employment. It was designed to help single parents gain the skills, confidence, and independence needed to create a better future for themselves and their children.
Looking back more than thirty years later, there are lessons from that program that still guide my life today.
The Power of Putting Words on Paper
One of the most important was journaling.
At first, it seemed simple enough. Just write down your thoughts and feelings. But what I discovered was that putting words on paper was much more powerful than I ever imagined.
Words carry energy.
They can inspire us, encourage us, and remind us of who we are. They can also reveal fears, doubts, and emotions that we’ve been carrying around without realizing how heavy they’ve become.
When we keep everything bottled up inside, our thoughts tend to circle endlessly. The same worries, frustrations, and questions replay over and over again. Writing them down gives them somewhere to go.
A Safe Place for My Thoughts and Feelings
For me, journaling became a safe place.
A place where I could be honest.
A place where I could cry, dream, question, hope, and heal without judgment.
There was no audience. No expectations. No need to explain myself.
Just me, a pen, a piece of paper, and whatever was living inside my heart that day.
Sometimes the most healing words are the ones you never say out loud. – Cleo Schoenfelder
One Page at a Time
Over time, I began to notice something interesting. The more I wrote, the more clearly I could see my own thoughts. Problems that felt overwhelming became easier to understand. Emotions that seemed tangled began to untangle themselves.
The answers weren’t always immediate, but they often appeared somewhere between the pages.
Journaling taught me that healing doesn’t always happen in grand moments. Sometimes it happens one sentence at a time.
One page at a time.
One honest conversation with yourself at a time.
Why I Still Journal Today
Today, journaling remains one of the most valuable tools in my life. It has helped me navigate heartbreak, grief, uncertainty, personal growth, and new beginnings. It has been a companion through some of my hardest days and a witness to some of my greatest victories.
When people ask me where to begin when life feels overwhelming, I often suggest starting with a blank page.
You don’t need the perfect words.
You don’t need a special notebook.
You don’t even need to know what you’re feeling.
Start with a Blank Page
Just start writing.
Because sometimes the act of putting your thoughts onto paper is the very thing that helps you find your way forward.
And who knows?
Years from now, you may look back and discover that those pages were quietly helping you build a stronger version of yourself all along.
