I Wanted My Guest Room to Feel Like Someone Was Expected
There is a difference between having a spare bedroom and having a room that feels like it is actually waiting for someone.
When I started updating our guest room, I wasn’t trying to make it look like a fancy hotel or create one of those rooms that’s so perfectly decorated you’re afraid to touch anything. 😂
I wanted it to be comfortable.
More importantly, I wanted someone staying in our home to walk into the room and feel like I had thought about them before they arrived.
That changed the way I chose almost everything for the room.
Instead of only asking, “Does this look good?” I started asking things like:
Where are they going to put their suitcase?
Will they have somewhere to charge their phone?
What if they get thirsty during the night?
Will the bedding actually be comfortable to sleep in?
Are there extra blankets if they’re cold?
Those little questions ended up creating the guest room I really wanted.
Starting With a Comfortable Bed
Obviously, if you’re creating a guest room, the bed matters.
I wanted ours to look pretty, but comfort was more important to me than piling the bed with decorative things that guests have to move before they can even crawl into it.

For the foundation, I chose the SWeave 100% Cotton Percale Sheets in white.
I’ve really come to appreciate cotton percale because it has that crisp, cool feeling rather than a slippery or overly soft feel. These are also designed to become softer with washing, which is exactly what I wanted for bedding that will be used over and over again.
On top, I chose the EverGrace 100% Cotton Waffle Coverlet Set in Birch.
The waffle texture gives the bed some dimension without needing a lot of pattern, and the neutral birch color works beautifully with the rest of the room. I wanted the room to feel warm and peaceful, and this gave me exactly that look.
For the sleeping pillows, I chose the Down Pillows, Queen Size Set of 2. They’re gusseted, fluffy pillows with cotton covers, and I liked that they gave me that fuller hotel-bed look while still being something meant for actually sleeping on.
And underneath all of that is one of the least exciting—but probably smartest—things I bought: the Ruili Queen Waterproof Mattress Protector.
Nobody walks into a guest room and says, “Oh my gosh, what a beautiful mattress protector!” 😂
But mattresses are expensive. I wanted something waterproof to protect it from spills and accidents while still being breathable and, importantly, not sounding like you’re sleeping on plastic every time you roll over.
Adding Layers Without Making the Bed Fussy
I love texture, so rather than adding lots of colors and patterns, I used different fabrics to make the room feel cozy.
The HOMEIDEAS Decorative Striped Throw Pillow Covers in the tan stripe give the bed a little farmhouse texture without taking over the room.
Then I added lightweight muslin throws.
I chose both the EMME 100% Cotton Muslin Throw Blanket and the Esterra Muslin Throw Blanket in Dark Gray.
This is one of those details that’s as practical as it is pretty.
Some people sleep hot. Some people freeze. Some want another blanket while they’re sitting and reading. Having lightweight throws available lets a guest make the room comfortable for them without having to come find me and ask for another blanket.
And honestly, that’s a theme you’ll see throughout this room.
I wanted guests to be able to take care of the little things themselves.
A Place for the Suitcase—Because the Floor Isn’t It 😂
One of my favorite practical additions is the GREENTEAK 25-Inch Premium Solid Teak Luggage Rack with Shelf.
This is something I don’t think we always consider in our own homes.
When you’re staying somewhere else, where do you put your suitcase?
On the floor?
On the bed?
On a chair?
I wanted an actual designated place for it.
The luggage rack holds the suitcase at a much more comfortable height, and the lower shelf provides additional storage. It folds when it isn’t needed, too, which makes it practical for a guest room.
It’s such a simple thing, but to me it’s one of those details that says:
“I knew you were coming.”
Water Beside the Bed
This may be one of my favorite little touches.
I chose the Goaste Bedside Water Carafe with Tumbler, with the embossed rose design.
The glass doubles as the cover for the carafe, so you can fill it before guests arrive and leave it right beside the bed.
I love that.
Nobody wants to wake up thirsty in someone else’s house at 2:00 in the morning and wander around trying to remember where the kitchen is. 😂
It’s a tiny convenience, but those are exactly the kinds of things I wanted to think about.
And Of Course… Somewhere to Charge EVERYTHING
This one is definitely a modern guest-room necessity.
I added a 500W Multi-Device Charging Station with USB-C and USB ports.
Think about what we travel with now: phones, watches, tablets, earbuds and sometimes laptops.
I didn’t want someone crawling behind furniture looking for an outlet—or realizing after they went to bed that they forgot their charging block.
Having a charging station in the room gives guests one obvious place to plug everything in.
Not particularly glamorous.
Extremely useful.
And I’ll choose useful every time.
Storage That Doesn’t Look Like Storage
I also chose the Best Choice Products 3-Tier Water Hyacinth Rolling Cart in Chestnut.
This is another piece I love because it works with the warm, natural feeling of the room while giving me three tiers of accessible storage.
It’s a perfect place for things like extra towels, washcloths, toiletries, blankets or other little items someone might need during their stay.
And because it’s on wheels, I can move it or change how I use it depending on who’s visiting.
Lighting That Makes the Room Feel Warm
For the bedside lighting, I chose the Safavieh Lighting Collection Atlas Table Lamp in the silver/mercury finish with an ivory shade.
I didn’t want the room to feel dark, but I also didn’t want guests to have to use bright overhead lighting at night.
A bedside lamp gives them softer light for reading, winding down or getting up during the night, and I love the little bit of character the textured mercury-style base brings into an otherwise neutral room.
It’s functional, but it’s also one of those pieces that makes the room feel finished.
It’s Really About Hospitality
When I look at the room now, the thing I like most isn’t one particular blanket, pillow, lamp or piece of furniture.
It’s the thought behind all of it.
I wanted a guest to be able to come into our home, set their suitcase down, plug in their phone, pour themselves some water, crawl into a comfortable bed and find an extra blanket without needing to ask me for anything.
Because to me, hospitality isn’t necessarily about spending a lot of money or having a Pinterest-perfect guest room.
It’s noticing the little things that make someone comfortable.
It’s anticipating what they might need.
And it’s creating a space that quietly tells them:
You’re welcome here.
We were expecting you.
Make yourself at home.
And THAT was what I wanted our guest room to feel like. ❤️
